Kyra Marcano’s journey with Chicago Run is a testament to the power of passion, commitment, and a belief in the impact of movement on young minds. Her path from teacher to board member, to Executive Director, has been a natural progression driven by a deep connection to the organization and its mission.
Kyra's Chicago Run story began back in 2010 when, as a fourth-grade resident teacher, she was placed at a school that partnered with the program. At her school, the kids ran laps on a track for 15 minutes each day with the goal of completing a marathon by the end of the school year. For Kyra, it was more than just running. It was about the joy and excitement she saw in her students, especially one student, who would race around the track with boundless energy, committed to getting better each day. The sense of pride and achievement each student experienced as they tracked their laps extended beyond the physical act of running.
This experience had a profound influence on Kyra. A former cross country and track athlete, she was disconnected from her personal running practice at the time. Seeing her students engage with the program inspired her to sign up for the Chicago Marathon in 2011—just as she was turning 26.2 years old! Kyra ran her first marathon for Chicago Run, a symbolic act that linked her personal growth with her commitment to the cause. Despite the challenges, including the unusually hot marathon day, it was an experience she cherished, marking the beginning of her deeper involvement with Chicago Run. Over the years, she ran five marathons with the organization – not because she enjoyed the marathon itself, but because she saw the direct impact her efforts had on the students and the program.

From there, Kyra’s dedication to Chicago Run expanded. When she transitioned to her next school, she didn’t leave Chicago Run behind. She brought the program with her, introducing it to a new group of students and even starting a health and wellness club alongside it. Over the years, Kyra continued her advocacy by joining the Next Generation Board, where she continued to expand awareness of the program and organization, and ultimately progressing to the governing board.Â
Her loyalty and insights eventually led her to be part of the hiring committee for Chicago Run’s next Executive Director. At the time, Kyra was running her own consulting business, working closely with school districts and nonprofits. Despite her full schedule, a staff member reached out to her early in the search, asking if she’d consider applying for the position. Initially, Kyra declined, but when an ideal candidate unexpectedly withdrew, she was asked to step in as interim Executive Director.
What started as a temporary role soon became a permanent position as Kyra’s commitment and deep understanding of the organization’s work made her the perfect fit. She took the reins with the same passion that had driven her from advocate, board member, and marathon runner to the leader of Chicago Run.
As Executive Director, Kyra has worked to ensure the continuity and growth of Chicago Run’s impactful programming. She’s focused on delivering results and fostering a culture of care within the team, balancing the demands of being part of a resource-constrained organization while ensuring the mission is upheld. Under her leadership, Chicago Run continues to thrive, impacting over 5,000 young people across Chicago with their during and after-school running programs.
As an educator, Kyra has always known the benefits of running on young minds are immense. Studies show that physical activity, like running, can help improve social skills, emotional regulation, and academic performance. By engaging in daily physical exercise, children experience boosted self-esteem, enhanced focus, and improved mental health. Kyra has seen first-hand the sense of pride and achievement that stays with children for years and is eager to grow and continue that mission.Â
